The Tybee Arts Association, in conjunction with the City of Tybee, the YMCA of Coastal Georgia, and the Tybee Post Theater present The Wizard of OZ over two weekends. All performances will be held in the Tybee Gym. Friday and Saturday performance are at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees at 3pm.

The performances are presented in arena style theatre in the Tybee gymnasium, with a magnificent 50 ft stage, rolling satellite stages, 60+ actors, live animals, projections throughout the show, and action happening all in and around the audience.

Tickets are sold ONLY at the door. Box office will open 90 minutes prior to show time!

Jonathan Byrd and the McMaken Brothers perform together on Tybee July 15, Huc-A-Poos at 10pm and July 16, North Beach Grill at 7pm. The concert includes Jonathan Byrd, an acclaimed songwriter and flatpicker from North Carolina, whose music is rooted in the traditions of southern Appalachia and narrative style of Texas songwriters; and the McMaken Brothers, a multi-instrumental duo that plays a mixture of Celtic and Appalachian fiddle tunes and old country ballad.

I want to bring you up to date on our progress to reopen this historic building as a cultural arts center benefiting the economic future of Tybee Island, and the surrounding community.

This year, for the first time, we opened our doors for performances. This milestone was possible due our successful plan of action over the past few years. Please take a minute look at my 2010 president’s report and after you do I hope you make a tax-deductible gift to the Friends of the Tybee Theater, by December 31, to keep our momentum going into 2011.

Construction is Continuing

Our most recent construction project, the facade, is now complete. We are so excited to show the world what a beautiful building this is and how important our theater will be to the local economy. All of our important work since acquiring the property in 2006, replacing the roof, exterior wall repair and restoring the facade, puts us in a position utilize the building for events - so that the potential of this space becomes real, tangible, and exciting. Next up is the interior construction required to receive a permanent certificate of occupancy.

In October we had a full weekend of activities including a comedy night on Friday and a Sunday afternoon concert featuring noted blues guitarist David Jacob-Strain. The sound was incredibly good and thanks to the efforts of our sponsor, Host South, the theater was transformed into a beautiful performance space astounding everyone in attendance. This magnificent effort is just a hint of what the theater will mean to the community when fully open. This month we were very proud to host the State the City address by Mayor, Jason Buelterman.

Community Support

Our friends at Leadership Tybee, part of the Tybee Tourism Council are sponsoring a major fundraising campaign through January 15, called Casting for Stars. Headed up by Amy Gaster and Greg Stoeffer, in this campaign, eight local candidates are competing to raise funds. The community response has been overwhelming and we are extremely gratified that Leadership Tybee and the Tourism Council have recognized the importance of the Tybee Post Theater to the local community. We are also actively seeking available grants and have recently received funds from Georgia Power, Levy Family Foundation and the JC Lewis Foundation. In addition, we are working on the planning for our 3^rd Annual Tybee Wine Festival, our biggest fundraiser of the year, which will be held April 15 – 17, 2011 with a whole weekend in celebration of wine; craft beers. Tickets are already on sale at http://tybeewinefestival.com.

The Challenge

Impressed with our progress and the major increase in community support, The City of Tybee has agreed to match dollar for dollar up to $65,000 towards the renovation of the theater. This means we must raise an equal amount of money by the end of the city’s fiscal year in June 2011. This means your donation now will be doubled and will allow us to make significant improvements to the interior and allow greater use of the theater.

Conclusion

Some did not think the rebirth of the Tybee Post Theater was possible. The Tybee community, as well as the entire Savannah area, has rallied to this project with money, volunteer hours and attendance at our events. This proves that not only is this project possible, but the theater will also be successful.

This report has shown you the highlights of what we have accomplished and your past support has helped make this all possible. I want to encourage you to make an immediate and generous gift in 2010 to Friends of the Tybee Theater Inc. Thanks to the Tybee match, your donation will be doubled and will bring us closer to our goal of reopening the Tybee Post Theater in 2011.

David Jacobs-Strain hails from Oregon, but criss-crossing the country to meet a demanding schedule is routine for the young man, He is best described as a slide guitarist and modern roots singer-songwriter whose musical journey begins in the wellspring of Delta blues but ranges far afield from there. In his mid-twenties, he already channels age-old wisdom and heartache with such dexterity, energy, and passion that you feel good, even about feeling bad.

He tours nationally and has numerous festival credits, which include the Strawberry Music Festival, MerleFest, the Lugano Blues to Bop Festival in Switzerland, the Newport Folk Festival, and the Montreal Jazz Festival. He’s also served as faculty at guitar workshops, most notably at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch. In 2008, Boz Scaggs chose him to open for his summer tour.

Seating is extremely limited based on guidelines from the City of Tybee Island. Our last concert was a sellout and this one is sure to be as well. So get your tickets Now!

2010 Wine Fest sets new Record Attendence

Wow, what a weekend. This year's wine festival was bigger and better than ever. Over 500 tickets were sold and over $20,000 raised to reopen the Tybee Post Theater.

We kicked of the Wine Festival in style with an "Evening of Oysters & Wine, poolside at Marlin Monroe's. Jenny Orr, her executive chef Ellen and all of the staff absolutely out did themselves. 6 different oyster preparations were available included, raw, fried, with spinach, white sauce and more. The first to go were based on Bonnie Gaster's oyster ceviche recipe. Delicious wines were specially selected to go with the oyster recipes.

The main event on Saturday was incredible. It was a picture perfect day at the lighthouse and the grounds were beautifully decorated with colorful banners, umbrellas and even art supplied by Douglas Jones. This year we added craft beers to the tasting selection and a silent auction for our guests. Thank you everyone who made this event such a success. Volunteers, Auction committee, wine distributors, sponsors, auction item donors and musicians who give up their time to make this event such a success. This shows the world what Tybee can do!

FoTT Annual Meeting

We had a very enthusiastic crowd at the American Legion for our second annual public meeting. Outgoing president Pam Lappin, updated everyone on a very successful 2009 which included the first Tybee Wine Festival, a Burn the Mortgage fundraising campaign and the debut of Lefty the Pirate.

2010 president, Gordon Matthews announced upcoming plans for the next year including events inside the theater. Events include an open house during the Tybee Wine Festival on April 17 as well as a stop on the Tybee Tour of Homes June 5.

Neil Dawson, project architect was on hand to answer questions regarding the next phase of construction which will provide a permanent certificate of occupancy and will cost approximately $175,000.

Incoming board member Sarah Jones gave us an update on a major grant she will be submitting later in the year and board member Ken Carter emphasized the positive economic impact of the theater for the Tybee community.

Pam was very surprised when the board gave her some vintage prints plus a star at the theater and she thanked the board and the entire community for the support she received during her 2 years as president. Recognition was given to volunteers Lamar Webb for her work as membership chair and Randi Bryan who designed and installed the gallery in the theater lobby. Additional recognition when to Dick Smith for his continued support of the theater and Daniel Turberville and his crew at Weedwackers for donation of the yard maintenance at the theater.

At the end of the presentations, Gordon facilitated a roundtable discussion with those in attendance.

Dinner at the Theater Fundraiser

We recently conducted our first event inside the theater! With the new facade and help from the city on interior code compliance, the theater is now ready for a limited number of events. We kicked it off with our Dinner and the Theater fundraiser. Various supporters held dinner parties at their homes on Saturday night, February 27. Guests donated what they would spend on a night out. At 9:00 pm everyone met at the theater for dessert and coffee.

Thanks to our dinner hosts, Bonnie Gaster, Cindy Meyer, Pam Lappin & Janet Rutledge. Also a big thank you to Monty Parks, All Points Cafe, brought his Cappuccino machine to the theater and served up delicious coffees. Many thanks as well to Stephen & Jennifer Palmer at Tybee Island Wedding who donated decorations. Each received a limited edition print of the Tybee Post Theater that local artist Marianne Seyden painted in 1999.

Facade Ribbon Cutting

New Look for the Tybee Post Theater

Our group recently celebrated the completion of the facade restoration project in December with a ribbon cutting at the Tybee Post Theater. We had a very enthusiastic crowd who listened to remarks by Cullen Chambers, executive director of the Tybee Historical Society, Jason Buelterman, mayor and David Crass, acting director for the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (HPD). Afterward the ribbon was cut and we showed off the old gal!

This project was possible thanks to a matching grant from the HPD as well as contributions from the Tybee community. The FoTT grant application was one of 37 received in the fall of 2008 as part of the SFY 2009 cycle, totaling almost $800,000 in grant requests. However, state budget constraints that year meant that only $20,000 in license plate money was available to fund only the top-scoring Tybee Theater project. At the ceremony Dave Crass said, “HPD was thrilled to make this grant award to such an unusual and significant community landmark.”

We were very lucky to have both Cullen, and one of our board members, John Herdina managing this project which came in under budget allowing us to add side exit doors to the scope of work. Project contractor is JT Turner and the architect is Neil Dawson who has worked on both the Lucas and the Morris Center. We also want to extend a big thank you to HPD staff members, Carole Moore and Bill Hover for all of their support.

The Friends of the Tybee Theater has been actively working to reopen the theater since we purchased the building in May, 2006. The facade project follows the roof replacement and exterior repair completed in 2007.

Next up is getting the interior in shape to have events. Please check out our phase 2 & 3 plans on our website at www.tybeeposttheater.org. Also please consider becoming a member or purchasing a brick or star to help move this important economic project forward. Thanks to everyone on Tybee who has supported this project.

Lefty Check Presented at City Council

I thought I'd posted my last blog entry, but it turns out that there's one more chapter. Here are Mel and Eddie presenting Friends of the Tybee Theater with a check for $4,000! Looks like we found Lefty's buried treasure after all! The presentation was made at City Council meeting Thursday, Nov 12. If you'd like to see the video, (and hear me, Mel, Eddie, Cyndi and other Board members yammer), tune in to the Tybee access channel.

Frankly, Mel Gordon along with Jim Ingham put at least $4,000 worth of labor into building and moving sets. Eddie Wilson wrote the music and story for us, and we didn't have to pay copyright, as we do for other productions. Lucinda Morin donated her choreography skills. Chris Garbett was running the split-the-pot raffle, which was sheer profit. Cast and crew members spent their own money on costumes and props that did not come out of production costs. Gladys Wise and others loaned us materials for props. Volunteers painted sets. FoTT board members and volunteers spent their time staffing ticket sales, the refreshment bar, and doing other housekeeping tasks during the performances. Bill Blakey, FoTT Treasurer, worked his heart out as Lefty bookkeeper, cast member and crew member. Talk about a multi-tasker.

This can only mean one thing: there are a lot of people on Tybee who love community theater and who support it. We can't wait to get the Post Theater open! Christmas is coming. Consider buying someone a "brick" or a "star." There are lots of people who would really appreciate one!

Third Wench from the Left - Part 5

Did I say we had four different rehearsal venues? Make that five. We rehearsed Monday night on the concrete slab at Memorial Park! Here are Mel and Wolfgang Hartz with the blue tape marking the stage, the exits, etc.,

AGAIN. And we were delighted to see Lucinda Morin, our amazing choreographer. Here she is, going over a routine with Glory Padgett in the fine weather we had that evening. Don't we look studious with our books? Call it P-A-N-I-C. The show opens this weekend!

And here's our distinguished Captain Kenn Wade, having a wardrobe moment with Twila Davis, our costume designer. Don't ask! Despite the hum of the generator powering Eddie's music and the chorus of 2,000 cicadas, it was a delightful evening until the sun went down.

We practiced by starlight and car light for a while longer, then we all went home!

3rd Wench from the Left - Part 4

One of our three rehearsal venues, the Black Box Theater, has two sides, and here we are practicing our conga line in the art and reception part.

Good thing for us it has some comfortable couches. All that dancing
makes us tired!

Now, here we are in the performing side of the Black Box. You may think that's Howard Bowden standing on a chair, but it's actually the character Roger, standing on the bow of the cruise ship; the one that Mel and Jim are building in the Tybee Post Theater.

Mel has been working on that thing too much! He told us how many feet wide this part would be, and how long that part would be, and where the wall would be, but he did stop short of telling us how many 2x4s he used. Come on, Mel! We just wanna sing and dance!

One of the secrets of Lefty's Island is the romance between Wendell and Susan, aka Tracy Priest and Samantha Claar. Aren't they a cute couple? They have a shipboard romance and a big secret!

Back at the Gym. Pictured are Willow, Ritajane, Polly and Rick. Willow's a theater major performing with us for the first time! Ritajane co-directed our performance of South Pacific on the pier in 2004. Polly is a welcome addition to our chorus, and you may remember Rick's unforgettable line as Chicken Man in Best Little Whouse in Texas.

Eddie Wilson, script and music writer, and Lucinda Morin, choreographer extraordinaire are two of the main brains behind this production. Lucinda is a former Rockette who has danced on cruise lines and all up and down the east and west coasts and now dances in musical productions at the Savannah Theater. She just listens to one of Eddie's songs, comes up with a dance and staging concept for it, and somehow, she gets us to make it into a Cecil. B. DeMille style production! At least, that's what we hope. We are trying to keep all our left feet on the imaginary stage in the gym. But at least we're in the room where the play will actually be performed!

I was on my way in for lettuce, wine and other essentials, when I heard the haunting strains of "Paradise is a State of Mind," an original tune by Eddie Wilson. What in the world, I thought. And what to my wondering eyes should appear but some of my fellow cast members selling show tickets plus split-the-pot raffle tickets in front of the store. These people will REALLY know the songs next rehearsal!

If you missed them this weekend, you'll have another chance to get tickets to the performance and split the pot on Saturday when they camp out in front of Burton's on the south end. The pot will be worth over $1,000 and raffle tickets are only $1, so that's a pretty good deal!

Thanks to great wenchers and wenchettes we sold 250 raffle tickets and generated a lot of buzz!!!!!

We will have a table next Saturday, 9/19 at Burton's at the Beach (the old Isla del Mar) for a short period only, from 12-2 during the noon rush. I will be there with supplies. Would be helpful once again if dressed up pirates could come to sing and draw a crowd. This really works. I realize time is full with lots of rehearsal but anyone welcome who can spare 2 hours.

Mel announced the exciting news that the Tybee Post Theater will again have sets, starting this week! It's pretty hard to find a suitable place to build sets when you don't have a theater. The Post Theater doesn't have AC or seats yet, but isn't it great that it's being used to build a set? Here are the results of Mel's work with Jim Ingham so far. See the gangplank? No pirate play would be complete without one!

And look for this big fat blue nautical rope when you come see the play.

While I was there, I took some shots of the windows that are due to be installed in the Theater this month!

I can tell you as an amateur actress, I really look forward to the day when we can rehearse in the same space as the production. We have dance rehearsal tonight, and it's hard enough to get all those steps right without having to imagine where we'll be when we really perform it. Our rehearsals are actually being held in three spaces: the old cafeteria, the black box theater, and the gym. That's a lot of adjusting for someone who ain't that great a dancer in the first place!

Eight rehearsals down, four weeks to go!
This play has everything: adventure, intrigue, humor, and a great love song! We are having a great time rehearsing for it. Mel told us one night that if we couldn't sing, we could just lip-synch! So then, JR asked, if we can't dance, can we just foot-synch? Seriously, we have some really accomplished singers in the cast, and it looks like everybody is having a great time so far. We've learned four songs!

1st Annual Tybee Wine Fest

The first Tybee Wine Festival benefiting the restoration of the historic Tybee Post Theater was an amazing event. May 9th at the Lighthouse was a beautiful Tybee afternoon with over 300 people in attendance tasting over 100 wines from all over the world. Attendees also enjoyed the talents of some of the island’s best chefs and the music from the band FOFOTT. Old Savannah Tours provided trolley service to the theater for people to tour the theater and see the progress and future plans.

Lots of folks took the tour and saw the theater for the first time. All the proceeds will go to “Burn the Mortgage” and “Raise the Curtain” hopefully in 2010. Many great people shared their time, resources and donations to make this festival a reality.

1st Annual Volunteer Tybee is a Big Success

FOTT board member & Tybee Times Publisher Cyndi Kinkel joins the gals

Jane Bridges and I participated with 19 other organizations in the first “Volunteer Tybee” event at the Guard House Community Center on Wednesday April 22nd. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of the various community organizations that benefit Tybee Island and to sign up volunteers.

Volunteer Tybee was well attended and we were able to sign up several new volunteers. The general opinion of the other organizations I talked with was very positive. Everyone was delighted at the opportunity to have all the various groups together in one place. It was terrific to see so many people working to improve and care for Tybee Island. Thanks to Freda Ruthford, Sandy Majors and everyone at Tybee Neighbors for making this such a successful event.

State Grant for Facade Work

As you may already know, FOTT has been award a $20,000 matching grant to restore and replace the front facade windows. Representatives from the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Revenue recently visited the theater to get the ball rolling.

Carole Moore, grants coordinator and Bill Hover, architectural reviewer, take some snaps.

We are very lucky to have Cullen Chambers on board to manage this project for us.

The Tybee Historical Society and its president, Jim Kluttz are very gracious to loan Cullen to us to work on this project. Since this is the only true historic preservation aspect to the theater renovation it is important that the job is done right. With Cullen's help it will be done.

We are so excited to get started!

FOTT Annual Meeting

We had a great crowd at our first annual members meeting at the American Legion, Feburary 19. Attendees were updated on what happened in 2008 and also what is a head in 2009.

Linda Gladin was one of many board members with updates. She walked members and guests through our financial information. The 2008 annual report will soon be availble on our web site and has a great overview of our accomplishments for the year.

Ken Carter, board member and director of the Lucas also updated us on events for the summer including the Tybee Drive In.

We also announced several initiatives. One was a design plan from architect Neil Dawson who has worked with us over the past couple of months. His mandate was to figure out how to get the theater open in the minimum amount of time with a minimum amount of money. He presented a great 3-phase plan that get us up and running on a limited basis for a total of $405,000. Plans will be available soon on our website.

We also announced a major fundraising initiative to Burn the Mortgage. Having to pay $3,000 each greatly hampers our ability to move forward with building improvements. Please help us raise the $350,000 needed to pay off this debt. FOTT members and Tybee Islanders will soon be getting a packet of information on this need. We are doubly grateful for donations received during these stressful financial times. When you get the mailer please consider donating. Each dollar received gets us closer to our goal.

Awards were given to past board members including past presidents Laurel Brady & Susie Morris.

Several city council members were on hand including Dick Smith and his wife Carolyn as well as our mayor Jason Buelterman.

We were honored to have George Lee in attendance. George is South GA Field Representative for Lt. Governor Casey Cagle.
